One of my daughters is a public school teacher. Her loans have been in forbearance (I think it’s called?) and when they start back up they’ll be 7 or 8 hundred dollars a month! It’s like being punished for choosing to serve their community. 🙄
This is a laudable goal and one that I support. Even if blanket loan cancellation might not happen for a while, it should still be legal and practical for at least the most burdened people to apply for loan forgiveness and get it.
I have heard an argument against forgiveness that goes something like this: "I paid off my student loans so you should too". Can you please address this? I would love to hear your take on this "argument".
You can also argue that, like I mentioned in my piece, that canceling the debt will also have a major impact the economy, which will benefit all of us. People will have money to buy homes, cars, etc.
In addition, as I already mentioned, these folks have paid off their debt. So, it’s really a moot point. They’re paying interest, penalty fees, etc. It isn’t the original loan that they are even paying on anymore.
Finally, the system is abusive and shouldn’t exist. We’re propping up an industry that is corrupt.
I really don’t get the fuss over “student loans” being canceled. No one makes it about medical debt being canceled. It’s interesting and odd. Plus, people took out these loans to better themselves, so the moralizing is so strange to me. I used to argue with people and bots about this very comment ALL. THE. TIME when I was an activist and advocate. It was so exhausting.
